Alan Shearer hit out at the Newcastle players on Premier League Productions for ‘throwing their arms in the air’ after they conceded the first goal at the Emirates on Monday night.
The St James’ Park favourite made it clear that the Newcastle players didn’t show that they cared when Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang fired home five minutes after the restart.
It was another lacklustre performance from Newcastle, who are slowly falling down the table with no energy, intent and purpose to their performances.
After Arsenal put three past the Magpies, Shearer was asked about the Newcastle players reaction when the first goal went in.
“Very worrying,” said Shearer. “When that happens and you are in a rut like Newcastle are then you look towards your leaders and your characters and you say ‘come on what have you got?’
“Show us something that can give us a little bit of belief and a little hope. Roll your sleeves up and have a bit of scrap and I didn’t see enough of that.
“What I did see was players throwing their arms in the air. ‘Look at me, I am trying and I care’. Well, that doesn’t show me you care. So, that was a very worrying sign for a lot of Newcastle fans.”
These are worrying times for Newcastle, who are lacking ambition all over the pitch and the sole blame is on a certain ex-Manchester United centre-back.
Newcastle are the only team to have been beaten by bottom-of-the-table Sheffield United, who are potentially heading towards not even getting into double digits in terms of points this season – that’s how bad those in the North East have been.
The next stop for Bruce is his old stomping ground at Villa Park and against a Dean Smith side playing on the front foot with intent and flair – what those in Newcastle are asking for.
