Jamie Carragher has told Monday Night Football, which was broadcast on Sky Sports, that Manchester City Ilkay Gundogan’s reaction after Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson made an error on Sunday shows his new found attacking instincts.
Gundogan was on the scoresheet against Liverpool again at the weekend, as he hit a brace in City’s 4-1 victory.
The German midfielder has now scored nine times in the league already this term, and his reaction after Alisson’s error at the weekend was evidence of how attacking his role now is.
Gundogan sprinted forward as soon as Alisson gave the ball away, ensuring he was in the box at the earliest opportunity.
And he got his reward when for City’s second and third goals.
And Liverpool legend Carragher said: “We’ve known for so long now about Pep’s full-backs stepping into midfield.
“When Cancelo steps into midfield it means Gundogan isn’t a defensive midfield player any more. He’s an attacking number eight, he’s a 10, playing between the lines. The role and relationship between these two has been pivotal.
“He’s getting in the box a lot more now.
“As soon as he sees this mistake now, look at his reaction [charges towards the box].
“It’s because there’s no striker he’s being encouraged to go past and he’s in that position.”
Gundogan’s attacking form has been one of the reasons why City have flown past Liverpool in the Premier League standings.
Pep Guardiola’s men are now 10 points clear of the Reds, and look well set to go and take Jurgen Klopp’s side’s Premier League crown.
