Perry Groves says Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Unai Emery were ‘out of their depth’ at Manchester United and Arsenal, respectively.

The former Arsenal player was trying to put forward the point about Gareth Southgate at England and how he isn’t getting the best out of the ‘elite’ players at his disposal, such as Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice.

That’s why he mentioned Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s ill-fated spell at Manchester United and Unai Emery’s period as Arsenal manager because he felt they weren’t able to get the best out of what was around them, hence why they ‘weren’t successful’, as he told talkSPRORT.

Many think that Southgate doesn’t have the tools to manage this current crop of England players and he is holding back a generational worth of talent – Kyle Walker defended his actions involving James Maddison.

The former centre-back doesn’t help himself by leaving the likes of Manchester City’s Treble-winner Phil Foden on the bench, playing James Maddison on the left of a front three and then starting Jordan Henderson.

But it’s these types of calls, including selecting Harry Maguire and Kalvin Phillips, that is frustrating fans, with Groves sharing his thoughts by using Solskjaer and Emery as examples.

Pressure on Southgate at England

“It’s the group of players that he (Southgate) now has at his disposal,” said Groves. “It’s the group of players that are at the elite level. You look at Harry Kane, Foden, Bellingham, Rashford and Declan Rice. He has got an elite players.

“You said about Solskjaer and Unai Emery. The reason why they weren’t successful at Manchester United and Arsenal is because tactically they were out of their depth. That’s why they didn’t succeed at those big clubs. It was a level that was too high for them.

“I can see the balance of when we started with Gareth Southgate to where we are now, in that seven-year period where fans are engaged in the team. The culture and philosophy he has created is second to none. The question is now, can he take these elite players to the next level, which is winning major tournaments.”

Emery proving people wrong

Whilst Solskjaer doesn’t have much of a managerial career to fall back on outside of Old Trafford, Aston Villa’s thriving boss does.

Outside of his spell at Arsenal, Emery has had a very good career in the dugout, including beating Mikel Arteta in the semi-finals of the Europa League before beating Solskjaer’s Manchester United in the final.

Not forgetting that Arteta, for several years, struggled at the Emirates, with fans calling for his head, several finishes outside of Europe, well over £500 million spent, before he could get them to this current position.
