‘Look at Conte’: Micah Richards makes a claim about Eddie Howe’s style of play at Newcastle

Speaking on the BBC Radio Five Live Football Daily Podcast, Micah Richards has been speaking about Eddie Howe after he joined Newcastle United.

Howe is the Magpies’ new gaffer and there’s an element of intrigue around how he’ll get the Tyneside outfit playing.

At times Howe’s Bournemouth were one of the most attractive footballing sides in the country, but Richards doesn’t think we’ll see that style implemented straight away at St James’ Park, comparing Howe to Antonio Conte, who hasn’t quite been able to instil his exciting style at Tottenham yet.

Richards was speaking about Howe’s style of play at Newcastle.

“If they’re used to a more negative approach, they won’t be able to switch it over overnight. Look at Conte, they have great players, but they were still really deep. I think Eddie Howe will be good, we’ve worked with him on Match of the Day 2, I love his enthusiasm, I love his ideas. He plays exciting football, but it’s going to take a little bit of time,” Richards said.

Patience

Newcastle may have to be patient to see entertaining football under Howe.

First and foremost, the most important thing this season is survival, and if the Magpies manage to achieve that, then they may be able to build something exciting.

Howe can play great football, but right now, he may have to be a bit negative and pragmatic in order to get the results needed to drag the Tyneside club off the foot of the table.
