Should Tottenham renew interest in Mateo Musacchio this summer?

When Mauricio Pochettino took over at Tottenham Hotspur in 2014, one of his early targets was Villarreal defender Mateo Musacchio.

The Star reported Villarreal wanted at least £20 million for the centre-back, leaving Spurs to take a cheaper option and sign fellow Argentine Federico Fazio instead.

That proved to be an unsuccessful acquisition, but now could be the ideal time to renew interest in the defender.

Musacchio is also a long term target of AC Milan, who are weighing up a move for him this summer. Tuttomercatoweb report he could be available for just £13 million.

This is because his contract in La Liga is set to expire in 2018, decreasing Villarreal’s bargaining position.

He has a release clause of 50 million Euros, but given that they risk losing him for nothing next summer, Villarreal will now have to consider far lower bids.

Musacchio is still just 26, and fits the profile in terms of age of players Tottenham should be looking to sign.

He would be an upgrade on Kevin Wimmer who appears to have fallen out of favour, and certainly on Eric Dier’s contribution at centre-back this season.

£13 million is a snip for a player of Musacchio’s calibre. He has been a regular for Villarreal this season, making 24 appearances and even providing two assists in his last three games.
