Everton are reportedly close to loaning out Joao Virginia.

Get Reading reported at the weekend that the Championship side were on the verge of signing the Toffees youngster on a season-long loan.

If and when it happens, it’s a brilliant decision by Everton.

The 19-year-old goalkeeper is a very exciting prospect after winning a League and Cup double with the Toffees’ Under-23 side last season.

Thing is, he can’t make the senior step up because not only have the Goodison Park club signed Jonas Lossl this summer, but they also have Jordan Pickford.

If Marco Silva promotes Virginia, he’d be third choice and with no European football on offer, he might not play a single minute in any competition this season.

But playing regularly in the Championship could do wonders for his development and if his move to Reading materialises, Everton should expect a much better, more mature Virginia to return next summer.

Maybe then he’ll be ready for Silva’s promotion.
