Glasgow Rangers midfielder Liam Burt has left Ibrox on a short-term loan deal.

When Liam Burt first appeared for Rangers as a 17-year-old, the Ibrox faithful would have been forgiven for thinking that it was almost inevitable that he would go on to become a stalwart for the Gers in the near future.

While there is every chance that Burt could still reach that level in the future, it appears less of a certainty that he is going to become the key man – and that is not entirely down to the 19-year-old.

He has endured a horrible time with injuries and is now looking to push for a place in the team where Rangers arguably boast their most depth.

So the fact that he has left the Gers on loan for a month is surely exactly the kind of move that Burt needed to help prove that he can still live up to the expectations that were created when he made his senior debut in 2016.

He has headed out to Dumbarton until March, and he may perhaps be hoping that he can follow in the footsteps of someone like Ross McCrorie – who enjoyed a loan spell with the same club in 2017.

Rangers manager Graeme Murty is seen during the Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership match between Rangers and Aberdeen at Ibrox Stadium on January 24, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Of course, McCrorie – who is currently sidelined due to injury – has since gone on to become one of the first names on the teamsheet in such a short space of time, and that has got to motivate Burt to make the most of his loan spell as some may have been writing his teammate off ever becoming a first-team regular when his move to Dumbarton was announced.

With so many players currently vying for a spot in Graeme Murty’s midfield, it will surely take an incredible loan spell for Burt to move himself significantly up the pecking order – but he has got to believe that it could prove to be the stepping stone that he needs to boost his chances of being able to realise his potential at Ibrox.
