Could Celtic’s Ewan Henderson follow in the footsteps of Kristoffer Ajer and Ryan Christie?
Once upon a time, Kristoffer Ajer and Ryan Christie weren’t the Celtic powerhouses that they are now.
This time in 2017, Ajer had just returned from a loan at Kilmarnock, while Christie was set to embark on a season-long loan at Aberdeen.
Fast forward two years and the Celtic duo are two massive players for Neil Lennon and will likely prove instrumental in anything that the Hoops achieve this season.
The point is that loaning players to Premiership clubs has proven very beneficial for the Parkhead side and Lennon will be hoping that a certain Ewan Henderson returns to Glasgow a much better player come May.
Celtic loaned the 19-year-old midfielder to Ross County this week and a season of regular football could really do wonders for Henderson.
Lennon has a ridiculous amount of quality midfield options at his disposal and therefore the chances of the teenager playing every week for the Bhoys were incredibly slim.
But a year of playing regularly with Ross County would give Henderson the know-how of what’s required to succeed in the Premiership.
He already has the ability. In fact, Brendan Rodgers, who gave him his Celtic debut, called him a ‘huge talent’ and said that the ability was ‘absolutely’ there [Herald Scotland] with Henderson, younger brother of Lennoxtown product Liam.
But clearly the experience isn’t yet, though hopefully that’ll change over the next nine months or so.
There is no rush on the lad, whose contract expires in 2022. Even if it doesn’t work out during his loan, there’s no point in throwing the baby out with the bathwater
Time is still very much on his side, like it was with Christie and Ajer, but the quicker he proves himself in the Premiership, the sooner Lennon will consider using him on the big stage.
