Loan manager hails ‘absolute class’ Rangers ace Stephen Kelly

Stephen Kelly of Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers scored a pearler on Saturday.

Rangers’ Stephen Kelly is doing very, very well on loan.

The 19-year-old midfielder joined Ayr United on a season-long loan from the Gers in July and seems to be making a big impact.

Kelly, who has a big fan in Rangers boss Steven Gerrard, opened his account for United in a Championship game on Saturday with a fabulous winner against Queen of the South.

He volleyed a dropping ball past Robby McCrorie – his Auchenhowie team-mate – from the edge of the box to give his loan side a 1-0 victory.

It was a magnificent first league goal for Kelly and his loan manager, Ian McCall, couldn’t lavish enough praise on him.

McCall told AU Media on YouTube: “It was a touch of absolute class to win the game for us. Total technique, he’s a wonderful footballer. I love him to death. I think he’s magic to watch.”

Gerrard is reportedly a ‘huge fan’ [The Scottish Sun] of Kelly and it’s very easy to see why. The kid has an abundance of technique in his locker and, going forward, it’ll be interesting to see if he can stake a claim in Rangers’ senior side.

But that’s a year or two away. For now, Kelly is getting schooled – in a good way – as to what it takes to thrive at Championship level and, going by his start, the teenager looks like he’ll have a brilliant first season.
