The Tottenham striker failed to seize his chance against AFC Wimbledon.
There were plenty of positives for Tottenham Hotspur to take as they prevailed past AFC Wimbledon with a 3-0 victory in the FA Cup third round at Wembley yesterday, but the performance of Fernando Llorente was not one of them.
The experienced forward received an opportunity to impress as Tottenham took on the League One side but he failed to make the most of it as he produced a disappointing display and was substituted in the 59th minute.
Having found the net against his former side Swansea City in the Premier League last week, Llorente should have gone into this game full of confidence, especially against lower league opposition.
However, the Spaniard’s impact on the game was negligible and he did little to suggest that he could have an important part to play for Tottenham in the remainder of the campaign.
Llorente has mustered just two goals in 22 appearances for Tottenham across all competitions this season, which, even when taking into account that he has mostly been deployed as a substitute, is a woeful return.
Vincent Janssen, who is now on loan at Fenerbahce, was heavily criticised for the lack of impact that he made for Tottenham last season, but he still managed six goals across all competitions, a tally that Llorente could struggle to reach.
Being backup to Harry Kane certainly isn’t an easy task as Llorente knows that he is highly unlikely to receive an extended run in the side.
However, on the evidence of the performances he has produced so far, Llorente has done little to justify Tottenham’s decision to sign him in the first place.
