Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk has congratulated Nathan Ake on Twitter after he signed for Manchester City.
Ake saw his Bournemouth side relegated on the last day of the Premier League season, but that hasn’t stopped Pep Guardiola from snapping him up.
The Dutchman will be looking to add some much-needed bite to City’s leaky defence and potentially hoping to have the same impact as his countryman when he made a move from the south coast to Liverpool.
This was Van Dijk’s message to Ake after his move to the Etihad was confirmed:
A lot has been made of Ake’s move to City, with Sky Sports reporting that the Champions League hopefuls have paid £41 million for his services.
There’s no doubt that Ake has talent, he can bring the ball out from the back and he has the pace to play in City’s high line.
But ultimately, he has been purchased to stop the goals flowing in for City, who would probably state that their defence was the main reason behind their second-placed finish this term.
If Ake can have the same impact Van Dijk had when he made an even bigger money switch to Anfield then the Premier League title race next season will have more spice to it than people think.
