Simon Mignolet has had something of an up and down season for Liverpool.
Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet says he has learned how to deal with the highs and lows of professional football this season.
This term has been a bit of mixed bag for the Belgian goalkeeper, with a poor start to the campaign seeing him relegated to the bench for a few games in December, before returning to the side shortly afterwards following an unfortunate injury to Brad Jones.
Since his return to the team, a marked improvement in his form and Liverpool’s defensive solidity has been on display – with a 30-year record for keeping clean sheets away from home broken in the league.
Mignolet has now told the Liverpool Echo, while reflecting on Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Chelsea: “What I’ve learned this season is to take the positives and the negatives and the praise and the criticism in the same manner.
“We’ll look at my performance again during the week and I’ll work with the goalie coach to see what I could have done better.”
| Position | Team | Clean Sheet | Appearances | Mins Played | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lukasz Fabianski | GK | Swansea | 13 | 35 | 3,128 |
| Fraser Forster | GK | Southampton | 13 | 30 | 2,624 |
| Joe Hart | GK | Man City | 13 | 34 | 3,060 |
| Simon Mignolet | GK | Liverpool | 13 | 34 | 3,044 |
| Thibaut Courtois | GK | Chelsea | 12 | 31 | 2,724 |
| Ben Foster | GK | West Brom | 11 | 28 | 2,486 |
| David de Gea | GK | Man Utd | 10 | 36 | 3,240 |
The table above demonstrates how Mignolet is firmly in contention for the Premier League Golden Gloves award with just two fixtures remaining. There has been some improvement from Liverpool’s number one this season, having already topped the number of clean sheets he kept last season during a title tilt, and securing a shut-out in each of the last two games the Reds face this season will put him in prime position to have something tangible to show for his turnaround in form.
In the early part of the season it was thought trying to sign a new goalkeeper would be a priority for Liverpool this summer, but Mignolet’s form over the second half of the campaign has helped to calm any fears regarding that position – for now, at least.
