Yes, this Liverpool side was enough to beat Leeds in their last League Cup meeting.

Liverpool host Leeds United in the League Cup quarter-finals next week; the first meeting between the two clubs in eight years.

They last met in the same competition in 2009, a match contested at Elland Road.

Liverpool did enough to win the game 1-0 – but their under strength team was one which looking back, will give Reds fans nightmares.

Here is a look at the XI which then manager Rafa Benitez used to beat Leeds, in front of a packed crowd of 38,000.

Diego Cavalieri

Well you can’t knock a clean sheet, and that’s what the Brazilian got at Elland Road. This was one of just 10 appearances the back-up made for Liverpool.

Now 33, he plays back in his homeland where he is first choice for Fluminense.

Fabio Aurelio

Unlike many in the XI, Aurelio’s spell at Liverpool was a successful one, lasting seven years, and nearly winning a league title. After a year back at Gremio in 2013 he retired with the latter part of his career hampered by knee injuries.

Sotirios Kyrgiakos

Greek international Kyrgiakos had a mixed spell at Liverpool during his two seasons at Anfield, and was sold to Wolfsburg in 2011. After a loan spell with Sunderland and time in Australian football he retired in 2014.

Jamie Carragher

Carragher captained the team with Steven Gerrard left on the bench for the fixture, and was an integral part of the Reds shutting out in form striker Jermaine Beckford. He is now retired and is recognisable to many as a pundit for SkySports.

Philipp Degen

Liverpool had hoped the free signing of Degen would prove to be a bargain, but even despite this he proved poor value. He made just 12 appearances for the Reds before his contract was terminated. Degen then signed with Basel where he won five consecutive league titles in Switzerland before retiring in 2015.

Andrea Dossena

Dossena looked like a fish out of water during his spell at Liverpool, and became a figure of derision for fans. He was sold to Napoli in 2010 before returning to England with Sunderland, and most recently Leyton Orient. Now 35, he currently plays for Swiss second tier team FC Chiasso.

Alberto Riera

Spanish winger Riera’s spell at Liverpool ended badly after falling out with Rafa Benitez. He has led a nomadic career since being sold in 2010, including a short spell with Watford in 2014. He currently plays for Slovenian side FC Koper.

Javier Mascherano

While the quality of some of the Liverpool players in the team is questionable, Javier Mascherano went on to prove himself as a world class player. The Argentine converted into a centre-back at Barcelona, where he has won four La Liga titles and two Champions League medals, and is still just 32.

Jay Spearing

Liverpool fans had high hopes for Jay Spearing, and the Reds handed him a new contract in 2009.

After promising showings under Kenny Dalglish, he was sold by Brendan Rodgers to Bolton Wanderers in 2013 where he has remained since despite the club’s relegation into League One.

Ryan Babel

While sightings of Ryan Babel in a helicoper on transfer deadline day have become part of football folklore, the Dutchman is still trying to keep his career going.

He was sold in 2011 and has had spells in Holland, Turkey and the UAE, and currently plays for Spanish side Deportivo La Coruna. The 29-year-old has scored twice in eight games this season.

David N’Gog

David N’Gog scored the crucial goal to give this Liverpool side a 1-0 win, beating Leeds goalkeeper Shane Higgs. N’Gog was sold to Bolton and later had a brief spell at Swansea City before returning to France with Reims.

Now 27, N’Gog plays for Greek side Panionios.
