Liverpool’s Ragnar Klavan is effective cover and will probably never get the credit he deserves

The past two games has seen the summer signing perform solidly, yet there some are still keen to pick faults.

When Ragnar Klavan signed for Liverpool from Augsburg in the summer it was clear that he was brought into to be experienced cover for Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip ahead of him.

The Reds had released Kolo Toure in the summer, meaning there was room for another centre-back who was prepared to play a bit-part role and provide strong competition for a first team place.

He may not have had the best start to the season as he played against both Arsenal and Burnley in the absence of Joel Matip – which saw the Reds ship five goals in the process, and the Estonian looked far from convincing.

The contrast between his performances from the start to the season compared to games against Middlesbrough and Everton could not be more stark.

He was called upon in the second half of the 2-2 draw against West Ham United and performed well and didn’t do anything wrong when he was drafted in for a 5-1 win over Hull City in September – while his EFL Cup performances have been pretty solid.

What would you want from an experience centre-back acting as cover? Perform pretty solidly when called upon and don’t drop a clanger.

What would you expect from a player that has just move leagues? It would take them some time to adapt. In Klavan’s case it has been both.

There is a terrific trait about him in that he will not be rushed into playing the ball at any time. More often than not he remains calm when there are shouts of ‘get rid’.

Though he may not be the tallest, he does provide a presence in the air, and he doesn’t exactly shy away from a battle.

No side is going to have the very best players prepared to act as cover, but it’s hard to see how much better Liverpool could have got in the summer for what they required than the 31-year-old.
