According to a report in Gianluca Di Marzio, Liverpool are attempting to sign Napoli defender Fouzal Ghoulam, and that could be good news for Aston Villa.

Napoli are one of the clubs who are interested in Villa defender Jordan Amavi (L’Equipe), who Steve Bruce is looking to offload.

And if Liverpool take away their first-choice left-back in Ghoulam, the need for Napoli to sign Amavi will only be increased.

Not only will Villa, therefore, be in a position of strength in the bargaining negotiations for Amavi, but it could also put the pressure on the Italian club to rush through a deal.

That can only bode well for Villa, who are under pressure to sell before they buy this summer.

Villa spent so excessively last year that they are having to cut costs.

Bruce wants additions, but he has been unable to make any yet – as Villa have not been able to offload any of their fringe players.

The claret and blues are reliant on sales to provide them with a transfer budget.

And, with Villa expected to receive a sizeable fee for Amavi, the left-back’s departure could finally allow Bruce to go out and sign some of his targets.
