Will a Liverpool player win the 2019 Ballon d’Or this season?

James Milner has hilariously stated on Instagram that he is out of the race to win the lucrative 2019 Ballon d’Or prize.
Given Liverpool’s Champions League triumph in June, and their performances in the Premier League last season, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see a player from Merseyside lifting the Ballon d’Or.
There are quite a few eyes on centre-back Virgil van Dijk, who is arguably the best defender in world football, at this moment in time.
Nonetheless, Milner, accompanied with a picture of him falling during a training tussle with Van Dijk and Mo Salah, brilliantly stated that he is an ‘early faller’ in the race for that coveted individual prize:

Milner, who earns £140k-a-week at Anfield [Spotrac], is a popular figure on Merseyside, and he will no doubt be hoping one of his teammates wins the Ballon d’Or.
The usual front runners, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi will be hoping to add to their already-stacked Ballon d’Or cabinet.
But given Van Dijk’s performances, it could be argued that he is worthy of winning that prize, but it wouldn’t be a surprise if Ronaldo or Messi walked away with it.
The big plus for Van Dijk is that he didn’t just prove his worth in England’s top-flight, but he showcased what he’s about against the best of the best – the Champions League.
But in normal circumstances, when it comes to individual prizes, the attacker is always favoured ahead of the defensive-minded player.
