Liverpool may pursue big additions this summer in search of a Premier League title.
Liverpool have enjoyed a strong season under Jurgen Klopp, but having fallen short of challenging Manchester City for the Premier League title, new signings could be pursued this summer.
The Reds already have Naby Keita on the way this summer and splashed the cash on Virgil van Dijk in January, but more expenditure could come as Liverpool chase top spot in the Premier League.
With that in mind, here is a five-point plan for Liverpool’s summer transfer window…
1. Resolve the goalkeeping situation
Liverpool’s goalkeeping situation has been a focus for many pundits throughout the season, and it may be something that manager Jurgen Klopp needs to address this summer. Simon Mignolet is far from a title-winning calibre goalkeeper, whilst Loris Karius sstill doesn’t look entirely comfortable despite some improvement in recent weeks. If Liverpool can splash the cash on a goalkeeper such as Roma’s Alisson or even Stoke City’s Jack Butland, then the Reds should be ready to spend.
2. Keep Mohamed Salah
The story of Liverpool’s season has been the goalscoring exploits of summer signing Mohamed Salah, who has now hit 36 goals in all competitions since his move from Roma. The Egyptian star could now attract major interest though, with The Mirror suggesting that Real Madrid are keen, but Salah could stay for a £200,000-a-week contract. Having lost Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona in January, losing Salah would be a huge blow for Liverpool, and they must ensure that he stays at Anfield.
3. Spend on a replacement for Emre Can
Whilst Liverpool have one midfielder arriving this summer in RB Leipzig’s Naby Keita, they may lose one as Emre Can prepares to leave Anfield at the end of the season when his contract expires. Losing the German for nothing will be a bitter pill to swallow for Liverpool, but Klopp may want to bring in another midfielder given Adam Lallana’s struggles, and with the likes of Napoli’s Jorginho, Watford’s Abdoulaye Doucoure and Leicester City’s Wilfried Ndidi all touted, more midfield spending could be on the horizon.
4. Consider a different partner for Virgil van Dijk
Liverpool took the decision to break their transfer record on centre back Virgil van Dijk in January, and the Dutch defender has made a huge impact since his move from Southampton. However, Dejan Lovren still looks unconvincing, and Klopp may well look to bring in one more centre back to challenge with Joel Matip for a starting role. Joe Gomez could push for more playing time, but if a player like Ajax’s Matthijs de Ligt or even Leicester City’s Harry Maguire could be signed, Liverpool should consider adding another centre back.
5. A new striker to support Firmino?
Often under-appreciated by many, forward Firmino has starred this season with 22 goals and 10 assists in all competitions, proving that he can lead the line for Liverpool despite some suggestions that he isn’t clinical enough. However, there are questions about those behind him; Daniel Sturridge and Divock Origi have endured difficult loan spells with West Brom and Wolfsburg respectively, whilst Danny Ings and Dominic Solanke aren’t necessarily proven goalscorers. Links to Timo Werner are interesting, but whilst Liverpool may not splash the cash on another forward like Werner, they should certainly weigh up another forward.
