The Liverpool striker was linked with a move to Newcastle United last month.

Reds hitman Danny Ings sat down for an exclusive interview with the club’s official website, and explained the reason why he rejected a January loan move to Newcastle.

The 25-year-old was heavily linked with a move to St James’ Park last month, according to the Chronicle, but eventually chose to stay and fight for his place at Anfield.

Ings has been desperately unlucky with injuries since making his move from Burnley to Liverpool in the summer of 2015, and has made just three Premier League starts for the Reds.

With the likes of Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane currently lighting up the Premier League, his chances of forcing his way into the Liverpool starting XI seem to be slim to say the least.

Ings, though, bullishly declared his ambition to become a first-team regular at Anfield, when speaking exclusively to the club’s official website, and shared why he rejected a January switch to Newcastle:

“After that long period out and all the hard work I didn’t want to give up. It’s such a great club and a great team, it’s all I wanted to be part of. Going into the back end of the season now, I know that if I work hard enough I can get some more minutes and try to contribute to the team as much as I can. I’m looking forward to it.”

Whether Ings is capable of convincing Jürgen Klopp that he has a future at Anfield remains to be seen, and with just two-and-a-half years remaining on his current deal, he really will have to start producing the goods sooner rather than later.
