Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson has revealed to the club’s official website that he was quick to rush to the referee and insist that his penalty decision was incorrect last night.
Appeal successful
Liverpool thought that they had conceded a spot kick when Mario Hermoso went down under contact from Diogo Jota.
Liverpool were 3-2 up at the time and Luis Suarez was waiting to take the penalty, just before VAR intervened.
Jurgen Klopp admitted after the match that he was slightly surprised that the decision was overturned.
But Alisson may have had some influence over the referee’s thinking.
The Brazilian stopper says that he rushed from his goal to inform the referee that he made a mistake.
And ultimately Liverpool were let off, as the officials overturned the decision, with the Reds holding on to claim the three points.
“About the penalty, I was quite sure that it was not a penalty,” Alisson said.
“I have good vision from the moment and I went straight to the referee to tell him because sometimes the referee doesn’t have a good [view].
“I think the VAR checked it really good, in a good way – this is my point of view. You have the images, you can know better and the referee made a good decision. It was not easy, there was a lot of pressure from the supporters, from the opponent as well but I think it was the right decision.”

Alisson stands out
Alisson’s overall performance in the match was absolutely exceptional.
Liverpool’s defence looked far from water-tight at times, but when they were beaten their goalkeeper often bailed them out.
Alisson produced a quite brilliant stop when Antoine Griezmann burst clear, he thwarted Yannick Carrasco from close-range and generally looked very sturdy throughout.
Liverpool’s win now puts them in a hugely commanding position in their group, with Klopp’s side now closing in on qualifying for the knockout stages already.
