The youngster who joined Liverpool at six, has been one of the stars of the clubs academy set-up advancing all the way to the U/23s this season. His all-action displays at Right-Back have won a lot of plaudits and caught the eye of first team manager Jurgen Klopp.

Alexander-Arnold was scheduled to play in the “mini derby” against Everton on Sunday, but received a call-up for the fourth round EFL Cup clash against Tottenham. Apart from a rash tackle on Ben Davies which he received a booking, he looked composed for his 68 minutes on the pitch.

Liverpool legend Graeme Souness gave high praise to Alexander-Arnold after the match, saying “he has all the attributes to become a top player and is extremely quick and aggressive.” Klopp was succinct in his praise calling his performance “wonderful” and praising the way he was able to keep his composure after being booked early in the game.

Like many young players at a big club, he faces a challenge to break into the senior squad on a regular basis. The positive for Alexander-Arnold is that he is versatile as he can play as a Central Midfielder. For now the 18 year-old will return to the youth set-up but he will do so in the knowledge that he has taken a very important step in his fledgling career.
