Liverpool legend Xabi Alonso could become Bayer Leverkusen boss with Gerardo Seoane under increasing pressure in Germany.

Seoane was brought in during the summer of 2021 having impressed in charge of Young Boys in Switzerland.

Last season went fairly well for Leverkusen; Moussa Diaby and Patrik Schick were outstanding as they finished third in the Bundesliga, just five points behind second-placed Borussia Dortmund.

This was supposed to be another season of progress for Leverkusen but it just isn’t happening.

One win in eight league games has piled the pressure on Seoane, which is now immense after Tuesday’s 2-0 Champions League defeat to Porto.

Liverpool legend Xabi Alonso could become Bayer Leverkusen boss

Seoane wasn’t exactly helped by a dire transfer window in which just two players arrived at Leverkusen.

Yet Leverkusen are now looking for replacements for Seoane.

Thomas Tuchel has alleged snubbed the job but ESPN claim that Liverpool hero Xabi Alonso is now emerging as the leading contender.

Alonso, 40, is currently out of work having left his post as Real Sociedad B manager this past summer following relegation from the second tier.

Alonso even getting them to that point in the first place was a huge achievement; Sociedad B hadn’t been in the Segunda since the 1960’s.

The Spaniard could now make an enormous leap with Leverkusen possibly ready to put their faith in him.

Alonso does know German football having spent three seasons with Bayern Munich at the end of his playing career.

This would be quite the sight for Liverpool fans, who saw Alonso become their midfield maestro between 2004 and 2009.

Some have wondered whether Alonso may even be the man to replace Jurgen Klopp as Reds boss whenever the time comes.

Alonso was coy about that subject last year, suggesting that Klopp was secure in the job so there was no need to talk him heading back to Anfield.

A move to Leverkusen could prepare him for that job though and should he impress, Alonso would surely be on Liverpool’s list.

Seoane hasn’t gone just yet but Alonso seems to be in line for the job, potentially following Sami Hyypia in going from Liverpool legend to Leverkusen boss.
