Liverpool would make a huge mistake selling Coutinho, even for £87m

Barcelona and PSG are both interested in Philippe Coutinho, whom Liverpool value at £87m.

After another impressive season for Liverpool in 2016/17, the Mirror reports that Paris Saint-Germain have made an enquiry about Philippe Coutinho.

With Barcelona also believed to be interested in signing the Brazilian, the Reds have responded by slapping an £87m price-tag on the midfielder.

Yet while that would be the second highest fee ever paid for a footballer, it is not unfeasible to think either Barca or PSG would pay it and that would create a terrible scenario for the Merseysiders just as they prepare to return to the Champions League.

Like they experienced when Luis Suarez left for the Camp Nou in the summer of 2014, there are some players which are essentially impossible to replace and Coutinho is another example of that.

Not only is the 25-year-old the most creative and technically gifted in the squad at Anfield, he was also their chief source of goals last season, top-scoring in all competitions with 14.

Leading scorer is probably not how Juergen Klopp views Coutinho, but it would be very surprising if the German was not planning to revolve most of a high intensity, counter-attacking system around the Brazil international over the next 12 months and beyond.

Selling the South American, even for a colossal fee, would only set the club back just as they are starting to establish themselves at Europe’s top table once again.
