Yet while Stones is the player currently absent Van Dijk is arguably a better suited long-term replacement for captain Vincent Kompany, who has also had fitness issues throughout his career but more worryingly has recently showed a decline in form.
The Netherlands international is therefore perhaps an upgrade on Kompany and becomes an even more attractive prospect for manager Pep Guardiola.

With relations between Liverpool and Southampton strained because of the Van Dijk saga, City are in the perfect position to win the race; something which is boosted by their impressive start to the season.
So although the 26-year-old is believed to have his heart set on a move to Anfield, surely the prospect of being a key player under Guardiola at the Etihad Stadium is a worthy alternative?
