In the build-up to the 2022/2023 season, Liverpool were expected to be on Manchester City’s necks yet again in a bid to win the Premier League title.

After missing out on their second league title by a mere one point, the Reds had to watch Pep Guardiola’s side become English champions for the fourth time in the last five campaigns.

However, Jurgen Klopp told beIN SPORTS as early as in as in October that his side are not in the title race.

Sitting in 9th place in the league table and 15 points adrift of Arsenal at top spot, it’s hard to disagree with the German coach.

As a result, the question remains whether Liverpool will qualify for the Champions League next season.

Ultimately, the cause for concern is not the fact that Newcastle United have bridged an 8-point gap between themselves and the Merseyside-based side, as a sizeable chunk of the season is yet to be played.

Instead, the red flags remain Liverpool’s back-to-back defeats to minnows such as Nottingham Forest and Leeds United, as they were deserved losers in both games, despite being expected to swat away both teams.

However, club legend and active pundit, Jamie Carragher still backs his former side to get into the top four by the end of the season.

“I think the north London clubs will both get in it now, I really do believe that. I think Liverpool will get in there ahead of Chelsea and Man United and then the two north London clubs will be alongside Man City.

But I think it will be a fight that goes right down to the wire”, he said, as reported by the Mirror and relayed by Anfield Watch via Twitter.

Carragher continued, “As a Liverpool supporter, if you offered me 4th now, I would bite your hand off. I think Liverpool are in a right fight for that and they could easily finish 6th. But I do think Liverpool will stick in there.

I think in that second half of the season, we’ve got to see the Liverpool of old at some stage. When they get back to that, it is too much for everybody else in this league, except Man City. But if they don’t get back to that consistency, it’s going to be tough.”

The Anfield faithful will hope that Liverpool make the grade for Champions League football next season, as an inability to do so would be nothing short of a colossal failure.
