Tottenham Hotspur are keen on signing Borussia Dortmund defender Matthias Ginter, according to The Independent.

Yet their interest could still be threatened by Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool, who are having to re-assess their options after missing out on Virgil Van Dijk.

The Reds issued a statement last night confirming they have pulled out of the battle to sign the Dutchman, after Southampton threatened to report them to the Premier League for making an illegal approach.

This could well place Tottenham’s interest in Ginter at risk, with Reds boss Jurgen Klopp previously signing the defender for Borussia Dortmund.

Liverpool were linked with a move for Ginter by Football Whispers back in March, with the report claiming Klopp is keen to get a deal tied up before July.

If this was the case then it was put on the back burner with Liverpool focusing in on Van Dijk.

Now a deal for the Dutchman is off the table, all options are back in play. Having been ready to spend a club record fee on Van Dijk, they would have no problem meeting Dortmund’s more modest demands for Matthias Ginter.

And this is why if Tottenham are determined to land Ginter, they might want to get a move on.
