Liverpool are reportedly interested in signing Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes ahead of the January window – a player that Toon teammate Jonjo Shelvey as branded “outstanding” and capable of “Brazilian magic”.

Guimaraes, 24, has taken Newcastle and the Premier League by storm. It would be fair to say he is one of the best players outside the top six, but such is his form – and Newcastle’s – they could be part of the top six come next May.

Clocking up 29 appearances for Newcastle since joining the club for £35million from Lyon in January, Guimaraes has been in stunning form. He is the beating heart of Eddie Howe’s Toon side, which have propelled themselves into 4th.

TNT Sports claim Liverpool are interested in signing Guimaraes. The Brazilian has a contract at Newcastle until the summer of 2026. But the lure of Anfield could tempt the midfield star. Shelvey, an ex-Liverpool player, is a big fan.

Following his goal against Southampton, Shelvey said: “He was outstanding. Topped it off with a great finish, I don’t think I could probably get my leg that high. He’s got that Brazilian bit of magic. Luckily it got us three points.”

Liverpool interested in Guimaraes: Shelvey branded player outstanding

Is Guimaraes good enough for Shelvey’s old club, and their widely-praised midfield? Without a doubt, judging by his 29 games for Newcastle. Liverpool need an injection of energy, youth in the middle of the park, under Jurgen Klopp.

Thiago, Jordan Henderson and James Milner are all 30 or above – quite the way above, in Milner’s case. Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Curtis Jones have their injury issues. On-loan Arthur is also sidelined for some time.

So, bringing in Guimaraes would be a wonderful bit of business. But given how happy he is at Newcastle, and that he has just become a Father, it looks unlikely that Guimaraes will up sticks in the next few months.
