Liverpool have reportedly added Mikel Merino to their midfield shortlist with the Spain international starring for Real Sociedad in La Liga – a player that Luis Enrique said after his Spain debut in 2020, is the “best midfielder in La Liga”.
Merino, 26, joined Sociedad from Newcastle United in the summer of 2018. The 11-time Spain star has clocked up a huge 175 appearances in all competitions for Sociedad, but this season, his form has gone to a whole new level.
Indeed, he has been given the license to get forward and in 15 La Liga outings, he has had a hand in eight goals. One goal of his own, and an impressive seven assists. Reports claim that Merino has a release clause worth a huge £50m.
Rudy Galetti says that Liverpool have Merino on a list of six midfielders. Along with, Youri Tielemans, Piotr Zielinski, Jude Bellingham, Moises Caicedo and Sofyan Amrabat. Enrique said in 2020 he is the best midfielder in La Liga football.

The Reds need a midfielder. They need a player to come in and start supplying goals from midfield, assists. Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and James Milner are all out of contract in the summer. They need replacing soon.
A move for Merino looks unlikely this month. The Reds have already spent big on Cody Gakpo and signing a new, big-name midfielder this month too does seem as though it will not materialise. But Merino’s release clause could tempt.
A deal in the summer could be much more likely. The Reds will know they need to improve their options in the middle of the park. Jude Bellingham is a priority but he will cost north of £100million. Merino would be a cheaper option.
