Dejan Lovren has congratulated Virgil van Dijk after his fine performance for Liverpool against Manchester City on Sunday afternoon.

The Reds went into Sunday’s meeting with City searching for a statement Premier League win.

Defeats to Manchester United and Arsenal had really summed up a rather slow start to the season for Jurgen Klopp’s men.

Liverpool found their top gear though and were able to beat City 1-0 thanks to Mohamed Salah’s second-half strike.

Few were giving Liverpool much of a chance against City.

Their form in the early weeks of the season has been disappointing and a host of injuries to the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joel Matip, Ibrahima Konate and Luis Diaz had really dented Klopp’s squad.

Liverpool still managed to beat City though and defender Van Dijk certainly deserves plenty of praise for his performance in the victory.

Van Dijk has been up and down with his own form this season but was back to his best on Sunday.

Van Dijk recorded seven clearances, one interception and one blocked shot in a superb display, shackling Erling Haaland in the City attack.

When City played the ball into the six yard box, it just felt like Van Dijk was there every time to cut out the danger.

This was more like the old Van Dijk rather than the player who looked a little shaky in the early stages of the campaign.

Many have praised Van Dijk and he has now been congratulated by a former Liverpool teammate.

Van Dijk took to Instagram to celebrate Liverpool’s win, notably posting a photo of himself shielding the ball away from Haaland.

Van Dijk’s old Liverpool centre back partner Dejan Lovren responded by stating ‘well done bro!’ with Liverpool fans loving his message.

Lovren, 33, is now out in Russia with Zenit St Petersburg and left Liverpool two years ago, but clearly still has the club close to his heart having enjoyed Van Dijk’s performance.
