Manchester United came away from Anfield with a hard-earner point.
It was always going to be hard for this fixture to live up to its billing and that proved to be the case.
But while the neutrals will have vacated their pubs and living rooms disappointed, Manchester United fans will perhaps feel a sense of relief having escaped down East Lancs Road with a point.

And there is certainly no shame in that, against a side that had averaged 4.5 goals a game at home this season.
It took a couple of heroic outbursts from United goalkeeper David de Gea to deny Liverpool the points, although Zlatan Ibrahimovic missed arguably the game’s best chance down at the other end.

However, a succession of hard-working displays were also key to avoiding a negative result – and United’s players will have certainly slept last night.
This is rather modest, however…
The result keeps Liverpool fourth in the Premier League standings, although United have dropped a place to seventh following Chelsea’s win against Leicester City on Saturday.

Incidentally, the Blues are United’s next league opponents at Stamford Bridge next Sunday, while Liverpool are at home to West Brom.
