It’s a must win game for Liverpool if they are to keep up the pressure on their opponents in the fight for the top four, whilst Arsenal will be keen to lay ghosts of last season’s 5-1 hammering.
To be played on Sunday 21st December 2014 at 16:00. Venue: Anfield, Liverpool
Odds: Liverpool 15/8, Draw 13/5, Arsenal 8/5
Liverpool are under considerable pressure to get a result this weekend. They have failed to live up to expectations generated from last season’s second-place finish so far this term, though a League Cup quarter-final win over Bournemouth in midweek has relieved some pressure on manager Brendan Rodgers.
However, this is a game they need to win, and certainly can’t afford to lose if they are to harbour any realistic ambitions of qualifying for next season’s Champions League.
Arsenal are two points off fourth-place, five points clear of this weekend’s opponents, and a win at Anfield would send a big message, given their record against the ‘bigger’ opponents in recent seasons.
Barring a recent defeat to Stoke City in the league, they have shown signs of form having won three of their last four games, but have been pretty inconsistent so far this season.
Both sides have their fair share of injuries going into this clash, but with both defences looking on the fragile side, and have the ability to counter-attack quickly, it would be something of a surprise if there weren’t goals in this one.
“Arsenal are a top side with outstanding players. It will be a difficult game for us.”
Brendan Rodgers
“Last year Liverpool scored over 100 goals. Now they’re not on the same trend. They came off the blocks very strong last time”
Arsène Wenger
