What a week it has been for Billy Koumetio at Liverpool.

On Tuesday, the Reds announced via HITC Sport that they had recalled the 20-year-old defender from his loan spell.

Koumetio joined Austria Vienna on a season-long loan last summer but with an injury to Virgil van Dijk, Liverpool recalled the big man.

And last night, he got his Reds career underway again with a blistering double.

Despite being a central defender, the towering figure opened the scoring for Liverpool Under-21s with a long-range effort from his own half, against Paris Saint-Germain in the Premier League International Cup.

Koumetio went on to score another one shortly after and the reserves’ coach Barry Lewtas labelled it ‘unbelievable’.

He told Liverpool’s official website: “It was unbelievable! It was good technique, first of all, the way he received the ball and then he spotted their goalkeeper off his line and he’s put it away. Pretty amazing really.”

Jurgen Klopp is well aware of Koumetio’s talents, having labelled him ‘pretty special’ back in 2020.

Problem is, Liverpool have a lot of very capable central defenders, making it even harder for someone like Koumetio to progress into the senior squad.

He has, however, already made a first-team debut under the German manager and if Van Dijk is out for longer than expected, don’t be surprised to see the Frenchman get further opportunities, particularly after last night.
