Trent Alexander-Arnold could be dropped by Liverpool after some recent struggles, according to former Reds midfielder Danny Murphy.

Liverpool haven’t looked right all season, even from the very first game against newly-promoted Fulham.

Yes, the 9-0 win over Bournemouth was astonishing and a dramatic late win over Newcastle United sent fans home happy.

Yet in every other game, Liverpool just haven’t quite looked themselves and are desperately seeking some kind of fluency.

The midweek thrashing at Napoli has really set alarm bells ringing, and Jurgen Klopp needs to find answers.

Trent Alexander-Arnold could be dropped by Liverpool

One of the biggest concerns for Liverpool will be the defensive awareness – or lack thereof – from right back Trent Alexander-Arnold.

We all know how great Alexander-Arnold is on the ball.

The range of passing, the pinpoint deliveries, the creativity from wide or even moving into half-spaces in the final third; Alexander-Arnold is an outstanding attacking weapon.

Yet defensively, Alexander-Arnold continues to show major deficiencies that aren’t going away.

Manchester United’s Anthony Elanga ran Alexander-Arnold ragged last month and the trip to Napoli proved to be a nightmare.

Alexander-Arnold completely switched off for Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa’s goal, even appearing to be disinterested in defending.

You can certainly argue that Alexander-Arnold’s attacking ability means his defensive issues are worth dealing with, but that’s up for debate at the moment.

Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy has now told the Daily Mail that Alexander-Arnold risks missing out on a place in England’s World Cup squad if this form continues.

Murphy has even suggested that Klopp may drop Alexander-Arnold in order to play Joe Gomez as a right back.

Gomez was also dreadful in Naples but may be seen as a more natural defender than Alexander-Arnold.

Leaving Alexander-Arnold out be quite the gamble from Klopp, but Murphy seems to think that a change could come soon.

“Jurgen Klopp has talked about reinventing the team, which usually means a tactical switch or changing personnel,” said Murphy. “Maybe he’ll think about switching Joe Gomez to right-back for a couple of games as he’s a natural one-on-one defender,” he added.
