A round-up of the latest transfer news surrounding Liverpool.
Liverpool remain in the market for new signings this summer, but with pursuits of Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk and RB Leipzig midfielder hitting brick walls, Jurgen Klopp may have to go back to the drawing board.
Despite the inability to sign Van Dijk, Liverpool may well remain in the market for another centre back this summer, with Klopp looking to boost his options alongside Joel Matip, Dejan Lovren and Ragnar Klavan.
Middlesbrough’s Ben Gibson applauds fans
The Daily Mail now report that whilst Van Dijk remains Liverpool’s priority, Middlesbrough defender Ben Gibson is another target for the Reds if they can’t land Dutch international Van Dijk.
Gibson, 24, has come up through the ranks at the Riverside Stadium, and he starred in the Premier League last season, starting all of Boro’s games whilst even earning an England call-up earlier this year.
With Boro relegated, Gibson could be on the move, though it’s claimed that Middlesbrough would demand a fee of around £30million and only sell to a ‘top six’ club – terms that may attract Liverpool to firm up their interest.
Elsewhere, the Daily Mail also claim that Liverpool have made a request to Leicester City, asking to be kept informed over the future of winger Riyad Mahrez.
Leicester City’s Riyad Mahrez celebrates scoring
The 26-year-old Algerian international excelled in Leicester’s title-winning campaign with 17 Premier League goals, though he couldn’t match that last season, scoring just six times – and many expect him to leave this summer.
With no timescale mentioned on just when Liverpool enquired, it would be a surprise to see the Reds pursue another big-money deal for a right-sided, left-footed winger having already signed Salah, and a move to Arsenal – who have also lodged an enquiry – seems much more likely right now.
