Liverpool are interested in Monaco star Youssouf Fofana as they prepare to rival Chelsea for his signature.

That is according to the Daily Mail, who claim that Liverpool are again looking at signing a Monaco midfielder.

Fans will remember that Liverpool wanted to sign Aurelien Tchouameni from Monaco last summer.

Sadly for the Reds, Tchouameni chose a move to Real Madrid and Liverpool are still seeking new midfielders.

Fofana is now on Liverpool’s wish list and there could be a real Premier League fight on the horizon.

Chelsea are looking at Fofana as a potential midfield addition as they seemingly prepare to sell Mateo Kovacic.

Who is Youssouf Fofana?

Fofana was born in Paris and spent time in the Clairefontaine national academy over in France.

After being let go as a teenager, Fofana became a pizza delivery man to earn money whilst his football dream was seemingly on hold.

Fofana ended up in the ranks of Red Star and Drancy before Strasbourg pounced back in 2017.

After initially playing for Strasbourg B, Fofana showed promise in their first team and earned himself a January 2020 move to Monaco.

Fofana ended up striking a superb partnership with Tchouameni as the pair dovetailed perfectly.

Capable as a box-to-box midfielder or as an anchor man, Fofana now has eight France caps to his name and helped Les Blues reach the World Cup final in Qatar.

Liverpool’s pursuit was Tchouameni didn’t exactly work out as hoped.

Former Monaco midfielder Cesc Fabregas knew of the interest but felt Liverpool could have looked elsewhere too.

Fabregas told RMC Sport that he would have loved to see Sofiane Diop, Tchouameni or Fofana join Liverpool.

Fabregas seemingly saw immense potential in Fofana and felt that he could make an impact at Anfield.

Liverpool are now looking closely at Fofana and could end up luring him to Merseyside after all – if they can beat Chelsea.
