Liverpool have joined the race for Lens pair Lois Openda and Seko Fofana after watching them in action.

That is according to a report from 90Min, who claim that Liverpool were among the clubs to scout Lens against Marseille on Saturday.

It’s suggested that Arsenal were among the scouts to watch Openda and Fofana too.

This maybe shouldn’t be a huge surprise given their recent interest in signing Ivorian star Fofana.

Miguel Delaney reported in his Reading the Game newsletter in The Independent (September 2, 2022) that Arsenal made a serious move for Fofana over the summer.

The 28-year-old midfielder was on the books at Manchester City but was sold to Udinese for just £2.5million in 2016.

Fofana has now grown into a superb midfielder and could find his way back to the Premier League if Liverpool were impressed.

The Reds also looked at Openda, who is attracting major interest after a stunning season.

The Belgian hitman has smashed 19 goals and three assists in 34 Ligue 1 games this season, causing mayhem with his pace.

How could Lois Openda and Seko Fofana fit in at Liverpool?

Openda is almost solely a striker; he has been used out wide on occasion, but he is more of a central forward.

The 23-year-old is an absolute livewire and loves to play on the shoulder of the last defender.

Once he’s through on goal, few defenders will catch Openda and he has shown a clinical edge for Lens this season.

Openda would be another goal threat for Liverpool but quite different to Cody Gakpo in a central role, preferring to stretch the game rather than come deep.

As for Fofana, he has been likened to Patrick Vieira over the years and has become a very impressive box-to-box midfielder.

Liverpool could press him into a holding role but they would be better off allowing him to be all-action.

The Reds may well firm up their interest yet, in the hope of pulling off a double deal for two of Lens’ top players.
