Manchester City are planning to fight Liverpool for the signing of Borussia Dortmund midfielder Jude Bellingham in an £80million race.
That’s according to the Daily Star, who claim that Chelsea and Bayern Munich are also in the battle for Bellingham.
Bellingham is though claimed to be happy at Borussia Dortmund. He won’t push for a move back to England having only left Birmingham City in 2020.
Liverpool were thought to be favourites, but that may now change.
Manchester City chase Bellingham
City famously lost an English talent to Borussia Dortmund in 2017. Jadon Sancho made the move to Germany and became a star, just like Bellingham is now.
City would love to get some kind of revenge by signing Bellingham, especially ahead of Liverpool.
The 18-year-old already has one goal and three assists in six games this season. With Fernandinho and Ilkay Gundogan in their 30’s, new blood will be needed in midfield.
Bellingham wouldn’t be cheap, but he could bolster City’s midfield for a decade. Strong, skilful and versatile, it’s no surprise that Bellingham is now wanted by both Liverpool and City.
Bellingham is Liverpool’s top target
The report notes that Liverpool have made Bellingham their top target for next summer. 90Min even add that Liverpool are in regular contact with Dortmund over Bellingham.
Liverpool chose not to spend big this summer, possibly preparing their big move for Bellingham.
Gini Wijnaldum has left the club on a free transfer, and just like City, Liverpool will need new faces in midfield soon.
The problem for Liverpool is Bellingham’s asking price. Dortmund want £80million – more than three times what they paid Birmingham City.
That would be a club record for Liverpool, eclipsing Virgil van Dijk. Bellingham’s huge potential may make that money well spent, but Liverpool may not fancy fighting City.
