Joey Barton has signed a Liverpool player.

Last week, Jarrell Quansah left the Reds’ Under-21 side to join Barton’s Bristol Rovers on loan until the end of the season.

The big defender signed his professional contract at Liverpool back in 2021.

And the 19-year-old – who turns 20 tomorrow – will need a stint of senior football to get him ready for the men’s game.

Here’s what Barton said about him to The Bristol Post, claiming being in and around Jurgen Klopp’s first-team stars will have helped him already.

He said: “Liverpool have trusted us with this stage of his development and we’re absolutely delighted to have him. He’s got really good qualities and when you’ve been training with Liverpool’s first team, being in and around that picture, the next step in your progression is to get out and have regular men’s football.”

There’s no doubt that the loan system has worked wonders for Liverpool talents in recent years.

Who can forget how much a spell in the Championship helped Harvey Elliott develop his game, following a spell at Blackburn Rovers.

Quansah is only in League One and therefore he may not return to Liverpool ready to challenge the likes of Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk in the senior squad.

This spell could, however, be an ideal introduction into men’s football for the powerhouse centre-back and it’ll be interesting to see if he makes Klopp’s pre-season squad during the summer, upon returning to Anfield.
