Chelsea have reportedly won the race to sign Liverpool target Enzo Fernandez, with the west London side set agree a deal with Benfica worth €127m (£112m) for the 2022 FIFA World Cup winner.
According to journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, the Premier League giants are in the home stretch in their discussions to bring the 21-year-old midfielder to Chelsea, with Fernandez set to cost the Blues a club-record fee following the youngster’s performances out in Qatar.
The Argentine sensation was key to the South American nation winning their third-ever World Cup, and Liverpool have now seemingly missed out on Fernandez despite recent reports that the Anfield side had agreed a deal with Benfica to sign the now Chelsea-bound midfielder.
Bola Na Rede claimed that an agreement was made between Fernandez’s agent and Liverpool for the summer transfer window. However, it now appears that Benfica have agreed to sell the former River Plate star to Chelsea in one of the Portuguese side’s biggest-ever sales.
Indeed, Fernandez has the potential to become a starter for Chelsea for many years to come. And for Liverpool, missing out on the South American talent will be a hammer blow for Jurgen Klopp, with the German manager keen to bring a midfielder to Merseyside this January.
Whilst Chelsea are more than overspending to land Fernandez, there’s no denying that the midfielder could soon become one of the best in his position in world football, with Liverpool no doubt kicking themselves for missing out in the Argentine superstar.

After all, Liverpool looked to be in the driving seat to sign Fernandez just a mere few weeks ago, and the Merseyside club missing out on the Argentine to Chelsea will be something that will weigh heavily on the club and supporters for many years to come.
