A claim has been made about Barcelona being keen on a summer transfer for Liverpool maestro Thiago Alcantara.

As Liverpool prepare to host Arsenal on Sunday, perhaps a bigger concern in the long-term has emerged in the form of Thiago being considered as a transfer priority for Barcelona next season.

Barcelona weighing up Thiago transfer

The Spanish international has been simply sensational for the Reds during his time at the club, with Jurgen Klopp telling talkSPORT that he is an ‘outstanding’ player.

After struggling to perform in a No.6 role during the first half of his debut campaign in Merseyside, the former Bayern Munich midfielder adapted during the second half of the season and since then, he has not looked back once.

However, a report by Spanish outlet AS has claimed that Barcelona are interested in a transfer for Thiago from Liverpool.

Xavi is believed to be looking to add another midfielder to his ranks to bolster his options in the middle of the park, alongside other No.8’s like Pedri and Gavi mainly.

On one hand, it seems ridiculous to even suggest that Liverpool would even open the door to the possibility of a transfer involving Thiago to Barcelona or any club for that matter.

The 31-year-old is the Reds’ outright best midfielder but simultaneously, his injury woes have become problematic for his side.

For context, the La Masia product has started a mere 14 games in the Premier League this season and this constant pattern of injury-enforced absences could force the club’s hand into letting him go.

As supremely well-rounded as a player Thiago is, his lack of availability, age and declining resale value could mean the 8th place side perhaps consider selling him to kickstart their much-needed rebuild.
