Loris Karius has effectively written off the first half of the season after failing to agree on personal terms to leave Liverpool and join Basel this summer, according to The Athletic.

The Swiss Super League outfit made the Reds an offer to purchase Karius during the recent transfer window. But the German shot-stopper’s demands were too high for Basel to afford and changed tack to target a loan instead.

However, a temporary move to St Jakob-Park also failed to materialise, as Karius was only willing to forgo a small part of his salary to leave Anfield for pastures new. The 28-year-old has a year left on his £25k-a-week deal after signing a 12-month extension in 2018.

Liverpool do not hold any ill-feelings toward Karius for failing to agree terms to join Basel this summer. The club accept it was his decision to make, and will let him continue training with goalkeeping coach John Achterberg.

The Anfield hierarchy have no intention of paying up the remainder of Karius’ contract for him to leave sooner. Liverpool have also given the former U21 international permission to spend time in Berlin while recovering from a shoulder injury.

Karius has struggled with the issue this summer but showed an exemplary work ethic over pre-season. Club staff speak highly of his attitude during the training camp in Austria. He will eventually return to Merseyside to serve as Jurgen Klopp’s fourth-choice goalkeeper.

Alisson, Caoimhin Kelleher and Adrian are all ahead of Karius in Klopp’s pecking order at Liverpool. The German may now elect to wait until next summer to seal a transfer as a free agent. He has little prospect of playing any competitive first-team minutes while at Anfield.

Should Liverpool have paid Karius off to join Basel this summer?

Karius has endured a difficult few years away from Liverpool on loan, so will want to find the best club for his future and seemingly did not feel that would be at Basel this summer.

The Athetlic add the Reds banked £2.25m from his time at Besiktas, who ultimately did not trigger a £7.25m buy option. His two-year loan ended early as the Super Lig outfit could not afford to pay their debts, while manager Senol Gunes also criticised his performances.

A year with Union Berlin followed last season, but Karius only featured five times across all competitions. He never managed to take over the first-choice role. Urs Fischer consistently preferred Andreas Luthe whenever the 34-year-old was available.

Now, Karius will spend at least the next four-months in the Liverpool wilderness after failing to agree terms with Basel. That stint could also extend to the summer if no suitable offers arrive in January. But the Reds may have to re-think their decision not to pay him off.
