Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur want Josko Gvardiol but they may end up having to pay £96million for the RB Leipzig defender.

That’s according to Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg, as he claims that Gvardiol does have a release clause n his contract.

Yet that clause doesn’t come into effect until the summer of 2024, and this is leaving Leipzig feeling pretty confident of keeping Gvardiol.

Plettenberg claims that the ‘chances are good’ for Gvardiol to stay at Leipzig beyond the summer 2023 window.

90Min claim that Liverpool and Tottenham have expressed an interest in signing Gvardiol, as have Manchester United and Manchester City.

That report suggested that Chelsea were confident of securing Gvardiol’s signature but Leipzig seemingly have a belief that he will be staying put.

Liverpool and Tottenham surely won’t pay £96million for Gvardiol

We can absolutely understand why Liverpool and Tottenham are keen on signing Gvardiol in the first place.

Fast, strong, uncompromising, confident on the ball and already showing a great reading of the game at just 20, Gvardiol looks to be the complete defensive package.

Gvardiol was simply outstanding at the World Cup, being branded ‘’very special’ by Paul Merson having excelled in Qatar.

Gvardiol looks to be on a path to becoming one of the top centre backs in Europe and ultimately the world.

Why wouldn’t Liverpool and Tottenham be interested in a player like that?

When you add in that Gvardiol is a naturally left-sided defender – something that many managers want in the modern game – then you realise that is going to be with huge money.

£96million would be a club record for both Liverpool and Tottenham though, and they are two clubs who don’t usually make headlines for extravagant purchases.

Maybe if Liverpool have a new owner pumping money into the club, then a deal for Gvardiol will become a little more realistic.

Tottenham just seems to be a non-starter though, even if Gvardiol would be ideal for Antonio Conte’s three-man defence.
