Steve McManaman has suggested that Liverpool try to sign Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips if they can’t secure a transfer for Jude Bellingham.

The summer transfer window is around the corner and the rumour mill is starting to heat up with Fabrizio Romano ready to top up his petrol for a summer of chaos.

Expect the unexpected as clubs are going to spend stupid amounts of money on players – perhaps not Chelsea style, that has been beyond disastrous.

But Liverpool will be one of the teams dipping their toes into the water, but not on Jude Bellingham, therefore, the name of Kalvin Phillips has been thrown into the ring as he ‘might be available’ in the summer.

The 27-year-old moved to the Etihad last summer when the Premier League champions paid his boyhood club Leeds United £42 million (Sky Sports) for his services – he has played 102 minutes of Premier League football since.

Ex-Red McManaman discussed Liverpool’s upcoming transfer summer and how they have money to splash, but not the way fans want it to happen, as he told the Final Word Premier League Productions (01/05/23 at 11:25 pm).

“If Jude Bellingham is going to cost £150 million and Liverpool can’t afford him, then you have to look ‘who is the second best?'” asked McManaman. “And who is the third best?

“You have to go down the list of people that you really, really like. Their stats are good. Their numbers are good and they play enough games. Are they the right quality to fit into this team? Are they in our budget to fit into this team?

“Let’s be honest, Liverpool have got the cash. They have got money to spend. Yes, they can’t spend £150 million on one player and then give them £700k-a-week, that’s ridiculous. But there is money to be spent there.

“You spoke about Kalvin Phillips, for instance. He can’t even play in the team. He maybe available. I am not saying he is the right player. What I am saying is that there are players out there, who due to misfortune or whatever, aren’t playing in the team. That doesn’t mean that they can’t then play for Liverpool’s team.”

BELLINGHAM HEADING TO MADRID

Liverpool fans already knew that they weren’t going to sign Bellingham, but there was always hope.

Hope that something drastic would change during these next few months or he would just stay put at Borussia Dortmund and they would then go for him next summer.

But it seems as though he is heading to Real Madrid – it has been explained why Liverpool have pulled out of their pursuit of Bellingham.
