Liverpool have been encouraged to follow up their interest in Federico Chiesa.

Despite Italy losing Wednesday’s Nations League semi-final to Spain, Chiesa stole the show for his country again.

It was the Juventus attacker – linked to Liverpool this past summer – who set up the Azzurri’s goal with a brilliant assist for Lorenzo Pellegrini, in which he ran the length of the pitch to tee up his teammate.

One thing that Reds boss Jurgen Klopp demands from his troops is pressing.

And the way in which Chiesa created Italy’s goal with insane pressuring of the ball, from a Spain corner, illustrates that the German coach might well love him at Anfield.

At least, that’s the view of former Crystal Palace defender Damien Delaney, who claims that this is the sort of player who the Liverpool boss has ‘daydreams about’ bringing to Merseyside.

He told Virgin Media Sport: “I’m a fan of his directness. It’s very rare these days you see a player as direct as him. Everytime he gets the ball it’s head down and run. For me he’s the sort of player Jurgen Klopp probably daydreams about – long daydreams! If you ask Klopp one player in the world he could take, he’d take him. He would fit that Liverpool front line incredibly well.”

Well aware

If rumours are believed, Klopp is well aware of Chiesa and does want him at Liverpool.

That’s because during the summer, La Repubblica in Italy reported that the Premier League giants had an £86 million bid rejected, after Klopp deemed him ‘perfect’.

That would’ve made him Liverpool’s record signing had the bid been accepted and the 23-year-old wound up joining.

But based on last night’s showing, combined with the fact he won Euro 2020 for his country, Klopp and any other interested party will need to stump up at least nine figures to get him.

And honestly, he’d be worth every single penny.
