Jonathan Woodgate claimed during commentary on BBC Radio 5 Live that star Roberto Firmino and his assist for Darwin Nunez against Rangers at Ibrox was “world class”, as Liverpool strolled to a 7-1 win in the Champions League.

Rangers came into the match, knowing that they needed to pick up a win to give themselves any chance of European football after Christmas. They took the lead after an excellent first half, Scott Arfield slamming an effort past Alisson.

But Liverpool came roaring back. With the score 1-1 at half-time, Liverpool produced a second-half masterclass in which Firmino scored a second after equalising. Then, he set-up Nunez to score his fourth goal for the Merseyside club.

A lovely little Rabona-type flick after being played through – Nunez finishing with aplomb. A hat-trick in six minutes from Mo Salah, and a late goal from Harvey Elliott, saw Liverpool win 7-1. Woodgate raved about “world class” Firmino.

“You know when you talk about world class? Well that touch from Roberto Firmino was absolute world class. It’s a brillaint assist. Fair play to Darwin Nunez too, it’s a great finish,” Woodgate said, as quoted by BBC Live.

Woodgate: Liverpool star Firmino world class for Rangers assist

It was a moment of genius. One of those moments that makes a neutral fan open their mouths. Liverpool fans will know Firmino is capable of this, and Rangers supporters will have to put their hands up and just say, fair enough.

Most attacking players, when put through on goal like Firmino – but the ball is slightly behind them – will scramble to get a hold of it. Not Firmino. He knows Nunez is in a better position and can get a clean strike at the Rangers goal.

So, a little rabona into his path – and it secured the win for Liverpool. Nunez scoring his second in two games, after netting against Arsenal on the weekend. Jurgen Klopp has a headache ahead of Manchester City this weekend.
