Liverpool have high hopes for Dominik Szoboszlai and believe he could even fill in for Mohamed Salah during the Africa Cup of Nations.

Dominik Szoboszlai is known as an attacking midfielder but may end up playing out wide for Liverpool this coming season.

That is according to a report from The Athletic, who claim that Szoboszlai could feature down the right flank.

It’s highlighted that Szoboszlai is seen as a tactically versatile player who can feature as a number eight or number 10 in a Liverpool midfield.

Those roles will be Szoboszlai’s primary usage at Liverpool but the Reds also think that he can feature out wide.

Mohamed Salah is lined up to leave for a month in January due to Egypt’s Africa Cup of Nations commitments.

That’s an enormous blow for Liverpool and the clear question will be – who on earth fills in for him?

Maybe Harvey Elliott could play there, maybe Liverpool could switch Luis Diaz or Cody Gakpo away from the left flank.

Yet it’s now suggested that Liverpool see Szoboszlai as a potential option to fill in for Salah.

Szoboszlai isn’t a natural left-footer so wouldn’t play exactly the same role as Salah, but Liverpool seemingly see something in the Hungarian to play there.

Has Liverpool new boy Dominik Szoboszlai played on the right flank before?

Transfermarkt’s tracking tallies that Szoboszlai has played 40 games either as a right midfielder or right winger.

That’s nowhere near the 96 appearances as a central midfielder or number 10, or the 59 games down the left side.

Still, this just goes to show Szoboszlai’s versatility and gives credence to Liverpool’s belief of him playing out wide.

Szoboszlai – in the 40 games recorded down the right flank by Transfermarkt – bagged 13 goals and 16 assists, making a huge impact.

This was mostly utilised by RB Leipzig other than Red Bull Salzburg, so this is a role Szoboszlai has at least played recently.

Whether Szoboszlai can have the same impact as Salah down that flank is unclear but he could emerge as an option there in Salah’s absence.
