Ian Wright has said on Match of the Day 2 on BBC One (11:05pm, January 16, 2022) that Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool could sell Takumi Minamino if he is unable to score in the upcoming games.
Minamino scored for Liverpool in their 3-0 win against Brentford at Anfield in the Premier League on Sunday.
It saw the Japan international, who can operate as an attacking midfielder or as a winger, bounce back from his bad miss against Arsenal in the Carabao Cup last week.
Arsenal legend Wright believes that the upcoming games will be big for Minamino in regard to his future at Liverpool.
The pundit said on MOTD 2: “I think it’s vitally important for Minamino.
“We are going to find out in this time what’s going to happen with him because if he can score goals, then they will probably keep hold of him, but if he is not going to score goals in this time when they need him, then you don’t know what’s going to happen with him.”
Could Liverpool sell Takumi Minamino?
In our view, Wright has a very valid point about Minamino and his Liverpool future.
The 27-year-old is going to get chances due to Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane being away on international duty at the Africa Cup of Nations at the moment.
It is time for Minamino to shine and show Klopp that he can step up.
The £7.25m signing from RB Salzburg (Sky Sports) is essentially a squad player at Liverpool and even had a loan spell at Southamptn in 2021.
So, in our opinion, if Minamino is to show that he has a long-term future at Liverpool, then he has to step up now.
