Liverpool defender scored an own goal in Estonia’s defeat to Belgium.

Liverpool defender Ragnar Klavan was on the wrong end of an embarrassing result on international duty.

His Estonia side were humbled away to Belgium, losing 8-1 to Roberto Martinez’s side.

Klavan scored an own goal in the defeat, which saw Premier League aces Romelu Lukaku (2) and Eden Hazard on the scoresheet.

The former Augsburg centre-back was disappointed after the game, and described himself as angry.

Quoted by Belgian newspaper Nieuwsblad, Klavan said: “Perhaps we would best replacing the whole team, but that luxury we do not have.

“The question is whether we can learn from it, or whether we will always make the same mistakes. What I would like to say to the fans? I course I am very sad, am very angry and disappointed. I am very sorry. I will not sleep tonight.”

The result was not Estonia’s only hammering this year. They were well beaten by Portugal back in June, losing 7-0 in a friendly match.

Klavan’s comments display concern that a similar result may happen again if the team cannot get their act together, and he will likely be happy to get back to club level at table topping Liverpool.

The 31-year-old has been used as a back-up for the Reds, and may be hoping Jurgen Klopp and his staff do not assess a tape of the weekend’s international game.
