Divock Origi was enlisted to help the Red Devils progress to the finals of the Under-21 European Championship, but his goalscoring woes continued
Divock Origi did little to enhance his standing among Liverpool fans after drawing a blank on international duty – despite dropping down into Belgium’s Under-21 squad.
The 20-year-old striker, who caught the eye of the footballing world with a goal for the Red Devils at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, was enlisted by under-21 boss Enzo Scifo to help the junior side claim what would have been an important win over the Czech Republic in an Under-21 European Championship qualifier.
Called into the squad along with Zakaria Bakkali, Origi endured another frustrating night in front of goal, though, with Belgium slipping to a 1-0 defeat.
Without a goal in the Premier League so far this term, despite featuring four times for the Reds, Origi’s barren run continued on a night in which fans of Liverpool’s cross-town rivals Everton were treated to a hat-trick from Gerard Deulofeu.
The winger was in inspired form for Spain’s Under-21 side, helping La Roja to a comfortable 5-0 victory over Georgia.
Origi’s most notable contribution to date for Liverpool has come in the Europa League, with the 20-year-old setting up a goal for Adam Lallana in the Reds’ 1-1 draw with Swiss side FC Sion.
But unless the goals begin to flow for the Belgian prospect, then an extended spell on the Liverpool bench could follow.
