Danny Ings inspired Burnley to promotion in 2013/14 and Leeds United will be hoping he can repeat the feat at Elland Road.

Danny Ings of Burnley gives the thunbs up after the Barclays Premier League match between Burnley and Stoke City at Turf Moor on May 16, 2015 in Burnley, England.

The last time Danny Ings spent a season in the Championship, he scored 21 goals to spearhead Burnley’s return to the Premier League.

The 25-year-old, then, clearly has pedigree in the second tier which perhaps explains why Leeds United want to rescue him from his Liverpool nightmare in January, as reported by ESPN.

Ings, who has suffered two serious knee injuries since arriving at Liverpool from Burnley in the summer of 2015, is nearing a return to first-team football though it is difficult to see how he can force his way into Jurgen Klopp’s first-team plans.

Leeds believe the one-time England international can prove crucial in their promotion bid, however. And his track record with Sean Dyche’s Clarets suggest they may have a point.

Thomas Christiansen has Pierre-Michel Lasogga as is only senior and fully fit centre-forward at the moment with Caleb Ekuban, a summer signing from Chievo, on the sidelines for another month at least with injury.

Therefore, Ings could provide some much-needed options in attack. And, if he can replicate his influence at Burnley when making the potential move to Elland Road, he may only need five months to become a bonafide club legend.

After all, it’s been a long time since Leeds played Premier League football. Too long, in fact. By the time spring’s promotion push is ramped up a notch, it will be 14 years since one of England’s biggest clubs were in the top flight.

There’s a real sense that the long wait could come to an end this season despite a run of three defeats in four games, however, with Christiansen’s side hugely improved from the team that finished just outside the play-offs under Monk last season.

And Ings has the wily movement and instinctive finishing to make a difference in tight encounters, potentially turning one point into three. The 25-year-old, then, could be the signing that brings Leeds back to the big time.
