Liverpool centre-back Dejan Lovren has taken to Twitter to pay tribute to Reds Legend Sami Hyypia, who celebrates his 41st birthday today, with a photo of a past meeting between the pair.

Dejan Lovren’s Liverpool stint hasn’t got off to the best of starts, but the defender is drawing inspiration from a club legend in the meantime as he bids to kickstart his career at Anfield.

It seems that the 25-year-old centre-back has admired Reds Icon Sami Hyypia for some time, tweeting a picture of himself with the now-Brighton and Hove & Albion manager when he was just 14.

Paying tribute to the former Finland international, who celebrates his 41st birthday today, Lovren wrote on his official Instagram page: ‘Look what I found today me and Sami Hyypia. I was 14 at that time it was a moment that i will never forget ! #LFC #Legend’

11 years on from their meeting and Lovren is now starring in the same position in the Liverpool lineup that Hyypia made his own for 10 seasons, having sealed a £20 million move from Southampton this summer.

The Croatian has some big shoes to fill, however, considering his idol made over 300 appearances for the club following his £2.5 million move from Willem II in 1999, winning two FA Cups, two League Cups, the Champions League in 2005 and the UEFA Cup in 2001.
